Providing Context and Thinking Critically
Context
Response journals require you to do two different things: provide context and think critically. Your first
short
paragra
ph should provide context. If you are required to read a Sherlock Holmes story or a news
story, you should summarize the main points of those items. This portion should be rather short
—
a
quarter to a half a page.
Thinking Critically
The next paragraphs de
monstrate your critical thinking abilities. Show that you have not only read, but
have paid attention, should react to the reading or summary by asking questions, offering answers,
thought about, dissected, and learned from the material. Use your engineeri
ng problem

solving abilities to
question and examine.
Format
Journal entries should be more than one double
-
spaced page, and should contain at least three or four
complete paragraphs. They should be a maximum of two pages.
All journal assignments must

be double

spaced

be submitted to the Blackboard Assignments tab
•
be in a standard 12
-
point font
•
be in standard academic essay format
•
have standard 1†margins on each side
•
have
numbered pages
•
include an appropriate heading
•
include an appropriate title
•
ack
nowledge all aid from students, professors, family members, etc. at the end of every
assignment.
