Within the literature, there is a very significant debate concerning the status and role of HRM and whether it has successfully evolved beyond previous models of personnel management. A recent paper which provides an excellent overview of the debate in Australia is Kochan, T. (2004). ‘Restoring Trust in the Management Profession’ Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources’, 42(2), 132-146. Also, Benson et al (2003) paper provides an outline of the recent developments in HRM in a variety of Asian countries. Students who wish to further explore these issues in a particular country of interest should refer to the journal Asia Pacific Business Review June, 2003; 9(4). in the university library electronic databases (see http://library.newcastle.edu.au/search/s?SEARCH=asia+pacific+business+review ; library password required).
